What happens if i never update my software?

First what are some of the things in an update.

Sadly there are people who have their minds set on doing bad things. To keep your programs protected the people who maintain the programs regularly write updates to those programs to protect against the new ways some people invent to do bad things.

For Microsoft Windows, those updates are published on a schedule. Each monthly update (usually the 2nd Tuesday of the month) includes all previously released fixes. These updates keep your system protected from known security risks. As new weaknesses are discovered, new updates are published. That is why it is important to regularly apply those security updates.

Sometimes there are features that some may find helpful, maybe not everyone but the developers agree it may be a good idea. Sometimes when new software is released (like games) it might make better use of your hardware if a few tweaks are made. Sometimes Microsoft may issue what is called a driver update to do this. Other times, like Microsoft, the program developers may publish an update. There may be other reasons but they are not related to keeping your device secure. These are released during the fourth week of the month.

Sometimes a weakness is discovered that has to be fixed immediately. That is when an Out-of-Band update is released. It can be released at any time.

Although the released schedules are specific to Windows, the reasons apply to other programs and platforms like Android.

So what happens if you do not update your tech? For Security updates, it’s like taking all the locks off the windows and doors. Most people won’t notice, but one day a burglar will visit. Keep the locks on and you’ll be safer….
